Scottish Council Pre-feasibility Study for Mine Water Geothermal Energy Opportunities

  • December 07, 2022

Date: March 2022 – September 2022
Location: Scotland Client: Public sector client
Stage: Pre-feasibility

Following the successful mine water geothermal screening programme, detailed investigation has identified potential for three multi-megawatt mine water geothermal systems in this local authority area. The study has assessed subsurface coal mine water resources alongside the existing mine water resources at the surface, understanding how potential systems could work in parallel to one another. The proximity to local authority owned heating and cooling demands was mapped by TRE’s partnering company to provide evidence that mine water in this region can deliver a means to combat fuel poverty and elevated energy prices. There is strong evidence to suggest that one of these projects can be regarded as the “best” mine water geothermal resource in Scotland.
