Flooded Oil Shale Mine Shared-loop Heat Network

  • November 01, 2017

Date: Oct 2017 – Nov 2017
Location: Midlothian, Scotland
Client: Public Sector
Stage: Pre-feasibility

TRE carried out a high-level assessment of the potential heating and cooling resource within the abandoned oil shale mines just north of the Pentland Industrial Estate near Straiton. The results demonstrated an attractive proposition for providing cooling to Sainsbury’s and heating to IKEA via the water held within the flooded mine workings.

This project was funded by the Low Carbon Infrastructure Programme (LCIP) managed by Scottish Enterprise as part of a wider project to assess the feasibility of a district energy scheme to supply a proportion of power, heating and cooling requirements to key stakeholders in the area.
